How Should I name my MP3 Files?
The generally
accepted way, is to use
Artist - Song Title.mp3
For
example:
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run.mp3
A
Day In The Life - The Beatles.mp3
Notice
that all words (even short common ones), are capitalized. In
most cases, this is the correct way, as that is how they are
actually listed on the album/CD liner notes. The exception would
be artists who insist on all lower case letters.
Many
people reverse that order, so that the song title comes first -
that is personal preference, but equally correct.
Some
people put a lot of information in the filenames, but this is
incorrect, since that information belongs in the file's tag
data. Putting too much information in the filename, such as
track number, comments, etc., will result in the names being too
long, hard to read, and sometimes causes issues with certain
software. If the songs are tagged properly when ripped and
encoded, there is no need to put that information in the
filename. Most software these days ignore the filename (other
than as the key for finding the file), and use the tag data to
sort, search, etc.
Some
software which uses batch mode to do things, such as encode,
changing tag information, etc., can only hold xxx number of
filenames in their buffer storage, so using basic file naming
conventions like above, will allow more files to be processed at
a given time, and take up less memory and resources for the
computer or device.
